From your photographer's lens to your brand's story
As a brand photographer, one of the most common things I hear from clients before a shoot is: "I'm not sure what is need - I just know I want it to look like me."
That's exactly where Strategic planning comes in. A branding photoshoot isn't just about getting pretty pictures - it's about creating intentional, aligned, visuals that speak directly to your audience and elevate your business. So let's walk through how to set the stage for success - before we even pick up the camera.

Step 1: start with strategy, not style
Before choosing your outfit or scrolling Pinterest for poses, ask yourself:
- What do I want these images to do for my brand?
- Where will I be using them (website, social media, ads, email, etc.)?
- What message am I trying to send?
Your shoot should reflect the values and vibe of your brand. That means tone, color palette, and energy all need to work in harmony with your brands Identity.
Pro tip: I send all my clients a pre-shoot questionnaire to help clarify their brands voice, audience, and marketing ones. It shapes everything from your shot list to the mood of your shoot.
Step 2: Plan for VERSATILITY
A successful branding session. gives you a library of content, not just a handful of headshots.
We'll think through
- Horizontal vs. vertical crops
- Negative space for text overlays (great for banners or sales pages)
- A mix up of close-ups, lifestyle shots, flat lays, and environmental portraits
- Visual story telling to show you in action: working, creating, connection
The goal? To give you visuals you can use over and over again in different ways across your brand.
Step 3: Choose locations that match your message
The setting should align with the story you're telling. A wellness coach may shoot, in a clean, calming space with natural light. A tech consultant need a more modern, urban backdrop.
We can shoot in:
- Your home or office (adds a personal touch)
- a styled studio space
- On-location (coffee shops, co-working spaces, outdoors - whatever reflects your vibe)
Pro tip: I help scout locations or rent styled spaces that match your brand feel and give you variety in one shoot.
Step 4: Prep your wardrobe (and your Mind)
Clothing plays a big role in visual identity. I'll help you choose pieces that:
- Reflect your brand colors and tone
- Fit well and feel like you
- Allow movement, layering, and variety for different looks
Also, take time the night before to rest, hydrate and trust the process. Nerves are normal - but with preparation and partnership well, capture your most confident self.
step 5: collaborate, don't just show up
This is a co-creation. When you bring ideas, questions, and your authentic self to the process, it makes the final result even stronger. During our shoot, I'll guide you through poses and movement, but also encourage natural moments that feel real. Because the best branding photos are the ones where you shine through - not a version of what you think you "should" look like.
your brand deserves more than a generic headshot
Your visuals are one of the most powerful tools in your marketing toolbox. When we take the time ti plan with purpose, your branding shoot becomes more than a photo session - it becomes a transformation. One that helps you step confidently into your message, mission, and momentum.
